OUR STORY

iGLOW began in 2010 when the government of Kenya issued an alarm over steep increase in teenage pregnancy in the then Nyanza province region. As someone who had gone though the rural community and education system and could relate to the challenges that the girls were going through, IGLOW’s Founder Atieno Oduor believed she could create an organization that would inspire and support girls. It began as a pilot program. By November of 2010, the organization had reached out to 1700 rural girls.

Defending the Rights of Children

Thirty years ago, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) recognized children as their own beings entitled to non-negotiable human rights. The CRC, signed on 20 November 1989, explains who children are, all their rights, and the responsibilities of governments regarding their protection and nurturing. All the rights are connected; they are all equally important and they cannot be taken away from children.

This 30th anniversary of the CRC is a good time to recognize that:

  • Children need to be treated with dignity and respect
  • Children should be cared for and allowed to develop and be part of their communities
  • Children have a right to an education, to express their own opinions, and to participate in decisions that concern them
  • Children have the right to be protected against all violence and dis crimination, wherever they live, regardless of their ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth, or other status.

Child advocates throughout the international community must increase their efforts to help children thrive, renewing their commitment to protect and promote children’s human rights. While notable progress has been achieved on behalf of children, significant challenges remain—particularly for children, children with disabilities, and children in disadvantaged and vulnerable situations.

Education as a Human RIGHT

For IGLOW education is a determinant for opportunities and a fundamental human right. Therefore in line with SDG4 IGLOW strives to improve school enrollment and equality education opportunities (e.g., decoupling opportunities from social background) for children it serves.

In this context, quality education refers to everything from early childhood education, free primary and secondary education, and technical and vocational education offered in sustainable and equitable ways. An important distinction for SDG 4 is that the focus is not simply school access and attendance but the quality of the education attained. Unfortunately, many education programs have focused purely on the former points, leading to a conundrum: Parents report high satisfaction with low-performing schools. IGLOW works directly with schools to increase enrolment and access to and quality of education around the world.

Inclusive Education: Serving Children with Special needs

In many countries, children with disabilities are often deprived of their liberty, separated from family environments, and confined to institutions or locked away in so-called health-care facilities in the name of care and treatment.

The reasons for this isolation vary: stigma, lack of awareness and a dearth of support services for children and their families all play a role. IGLOW strives to ensure that children with special needs have access to education and are provided with reasonable accommodation. IGLOW works with schools to provide a nurturing all inclusive learning environment for children with special needs, including providing capacity building to teachers and working with the children’s parents on how they can better advocate for their child and take necessary steps to make sure their child receives appropriate services.

For children at risk, daily school meal is a strong incentive for families to keep sending their children to school and for the children to stay in school. For children who don’t know where their next meal will come from, IGLOW’s school meals program provides them with critical calories and nutrition they can depend on. Apart from school meals, the organization is also working on providing at risk children in day school with take home food rations.
